Dragon Ball DAIMA is one of the most anticipated anime of 2024, and for good reason. DAIMA is a huge milestone in the franchise as it is the last Dragon Ball project that Akira Toriyama worked on before his death. Because of this, fans want to know how this new adventure will unfold and see what’s next for Goku and his friends. However, one debate often arises when fans discuss the show. Where does Dragon Ball DAIMA fall in the Dragon Ball timeline?
First announced at the New York Comic-Con panel on October 12, 2023, Dragon Ball DAIMA will witness a mysterious spell that turns Goku and his friends into children, forcing them to embark on an epic quest to find out what’s going on. During the announcement of the show, Toriyama described DAIMA by saying:
The Weird Timeline Of Dragon Ball
A big reason for the massive fan debate is the confusing nature of the Dragon Ball timeline. At first the story was pretty simple, the series took place chronologically and followed Goku as he grew from a child to an adult to a father, fighting increasingly powerful enemies just like him. However, things take a turn for the worse at the end of Dragon Ball Z. After the end of the Kid Buu Saga, the story jumps ten years into the final Peaceful World Saga.
Shortly after the end of the Dragon Ball Z anime, a new show called Dragon Ball GT was launched. Dragon Ball GT picks up five years after the conclusion of Z’s Peaceful World saga and sends Goku on a new series of adventures. Unlike previous Dragon Ball series, GT was not based on a manga, nor was it written by Toriyama. Because of this, the series has an unpleasant reputation within the Dragon Ball fandom, with many debating whether it counts as canon.
In 2015, Toriyama will return with a new Dragon Ball Super manga. This series takes place between the Kid Buu and Peaceful World Sagas. This decision confused many fans because of how much happened in this relatively short time jump, and because none of Super’s events are mentioned in the Peaceful World Saga (since it was written before the idea of Super was conceived.)
